Background of the 121st Century

  • In the 121st century, humankind has settled the stars. For most of those ten thousand years, we were limited by the speed of light—scattering seeds throughout the galaxy in generation ships and hibernation pods. Each of those human gardens grew into its own perfect society, isolated from the rest of humankind by massive gulfs of space. Finding no trace of non-human intelligence, we were alone.
  • A few generations ago, true faster-than-light travel allowed the societies to meet again. The Earth-based Topian Union reached out to its human cousins across the cosmos. These reunions took many forms: trade and learning, rivalry and alliance, suspicion and conflict.
  • Ten years ago, we found something that was not built by human hands: the Gate. Floating near the isolated colony world of Shen, the moon-sized Gate opened to somewhere else. A ship, referred to as Fraktur, came through. Spilling massive quantities of energy, it shattered part of the Gate, devastating half the planet Shen.
  • Now, pieces of bizarre Gate-tech circulate on the black market as an alien Custodian diligently works to repair what has been broken. The race to claim the Gate nearly sparked an interstellar war. A hard-won treaty established Topia Outpost Prime—belonging to Shen, administered by the Topian Union—to police the spread of Gate-tech, learn about the aliens, and keep the fragile peace over the Gate itself.
